3 Years of Agneepath

The name, the man, the voice, the aura bears a lot of weight, the kind that's impossible to measure. It’s been 3 years since the screening of the 1990 remake, and ‘Agneepath’ still sends shivers down our spines.  Who can forget a film with such a deep and touching storyline? Karan Johar made the 2012 film as a tribute to his father, Yash Johar, who was the producer of the original 1990 film.

The film that released 22 years after the original does justice to the original story line, while at the same time beefs up some of the characters in the original movie. While in the original version Kancha Cheena had a flavour for good life with all the frills, Kancha in the remake version is not interested in these trappings, as he is more focused on his goal. The modern Kancha loves black and is least interested in adding colour to his life. Besides, as Sanjay Dutt plays the role of Kancha Cheena in this remake, his portrayal of the character has more meat than the one played by Danny. In his black-attire and bald-look, Kancha has such solid screen-presence that Karan Johar made things difficult for himself with a challenge of how Vijay Chauhan would overpower the villain.

The mesmerizing music and background score by Ajay – Atul blend with the screenplay; it’s loud, boisterous and adds to the earthiness of this film. Then there’s Chikni Chameli where Katrina Kaif adds to the tempo, which incidentally picks up with this song as if on cue. If you’re a Katrina fan, you’ll absolutely love her performance in the song! And finally, what’s Mumbai without Ganpati Bappa? Deva shree Ganesha is fabulously depicted and sung by Ajay Gogavale. Fans of the movie absolutely love ‘Gun Gun Guna’ and thoroughly enjoyed it in the film.

On its third year anniversary, if you haven’t seen the film yet, grab yourself a copy, put that popcorn in the microwave and gather the family for a night of thrills! For those of you who have seen the film, do tell us your favorite scenes from the film and what you loved best about it in the comments section.

Happy Republic Day

That rousing scene in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham when Anjali (Kajol) hears her little son, Krish singing the Indian national anthem – Jana gana mana and she gets emotional and runs to embrace her son. That scene not only harks on her patriotic spirit for the great nation, but also reminds us how proud we should be, not only on our Republic Day, but every day.

In Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, what we see in Anjali’s character is that despite living outside India, in London, her roots are still in ‘Bharat’. She loves to talk about India, she keeps asking her westernized sister Pooja (Kareena) to adopt an ‘Indian style’. She tells her son wonderful stories about her days in India and always reminds her husband, Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) to plan a trip to India.

It is clear from her character that she wants to return to India. It is what makes even the film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham so special. Every time we watch it, we see how emotionally connected Anjali is to her country and it makes us feel the same about our great nation.

Here’s taking a leaf from her character, to remind you guys, despite all odds, what an amazing, democratic country we live in. The republic of this country, our constitution and its preamble was created on great ideals. Wishing you all a very Happy Republic Day, and just like Anjali, we hope you make it a great one, always patriotic and happy to salute your country.

The Diary Of A Wanderer

Being a traveler can be one of the most rewarding experiences in this world. It enables one to get out there and meet new people, experience different lifestyles and most importantly look at life from a whole different perspective. The world is a much bigger place than we think, and there is so much out there that is still unknown to the common man.

In ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) is one such traveler who doesn’t let anything get in the way of his wanderlust. During the course of the film, he tells Naina how important travel is to him, and that he does not plan to marry or settle down as that would only hold him back. His passion to discover the world nudged him on to follow his dreams, which ultimately landed him a job for a travel show. As the film progresses we see how he explores new lands, meets new people and experiences various cultures and traditions.

Now if you find yourself asking questions like – “I want to travel, I want to be like ‘Bunny’. But where do I start?” The answer is fairly simple. In an age where the internet has made the world a much smaller place, there are numerous ways by which one can become a traveler. You just need the enthusiasm to break all barriers and just pack your traveling bag!

So regardless if you’re a teen with energy levels off the chart, or a senior citizen gallivanting/ambling; the right time for travel is now! It’s never too early or late to try something new, so be a ‘Bunny’ (Kabir), pack those bags and hop-pity-hop away!

A wedding is one of the most important events in an individual’s life. With life-long dreams centered on the event, they are always a grand affair. An Indian wedding is not just about two individuals coming together; it’s about two families, two cultures blending into one which makes it all the more interesting. And what’s a wedding if not done in the traditional Indian style! Dharma Productions has been the breeding ground of traditional Indian weddings that flaunt Indian customs and rituals with unmatched brilliance and grandeur.

Needless to say, this brings back memories of some of the most elegant weddings in Hindi Cinema. Their extravagant set-ups, lavish preparations, gorgeous brides & handsome grooms, hyper-excited families, dazzling pre-wedding performances such as sangeet, engagement, cocktail parties, etc. make the shaadi moments, in each of these films, quite memorable.

What adds flavor to the weddings in these movies are the awesome songs such as Banno ki Saheli from ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ or Dilli Waali Girlfriend from ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’. How can we forget the feeling evoked by the dance numbers Daingad Daingad from ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ or Maahi ve from ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’? Last but not the least, the classic number from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ - Saajanji Ghar Aaye is the ultimate shaadi song which has our toes tapping to the music.

It’s Time to Celebrate!

There couldn’t have been a better start for Dharma Productions. With several hit movies in 2014, the Karan Johar led production house has never been short of reasons to celebrate. Whether that is movies going on to become blockbuster hits or the introduction of new faces that gradually become role models and style icons, Dharma Productions has always been a place of celebrations.

Dharma productions added yet another feather in its cap at the award functions held recently. With awards won in several categories at the Screen Awards 2015 and Star Guild Awards 2015, it’s time to party. The North meets South epic story ‘2 States’ where we witness Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt) and Krish Malhotra’s (Arjun Kapoor) love-story on the big screen won an award in the ‘Best Film Marketing’ category at the Screen Awards 2015.

All of us remember the entertaining rom-com ‘Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya’, don’t we? And how we loved the sensational chemistry between Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan! Well, the audience loved it too and more so, the adorable character of Kavya Pratap Singh for which Alia bagged the ‘Life Ok Hero Award (Female)’ at the Screen Awards. It wasn’t all for the gorgeous actress! Alia bagged yet another award; a most envious one, we must say, she won the Gionee ‘Most Stylish Youth Icon’.

The success of film-makers is measured by the success of their movies, and awards are the best way to determine this. Dharma Productions has, time and again, brought home many of these coveted awards and the credit goes to their over-powering stories, outstanding cast performances’ and everything in between and beyond. We congratulate the winners of the awards and look forward to many such moments.

Over the generations, Dharma productions has been the melting pot of awe-inspiring and above-the-mark movie experiences that leaves you asking for more. With their upbeat storylines and stellar mega-star cast, it has been winning the hearts of audiences; Indian and international alike. Whether it is the ‘Dostana’ (1980) love-triangle or the family saga in ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001), Dharma Productions is home to some very memorable films in Hindi cinema.
We take this time to sit down, sip coffee and press rewind on the tape of Dharma memories that we have grown so fond of. Let’s relive those moments, fall in love again with our favorite stars and cherish some of the best stories ever. We recount the many accomplishments Dharma Productions has had all these years, in this campaign #SchoolofCool – Dharma Productions A-Z.

Oodles of brilliant, funny, quirky, tear-jerking and anxious memories, and how we love them all! How about that moment in KKHH when Rahul (SRK) finally opens up about his feelings with Anjali (Kajol) only for her to realise that he loves Tina (Rani Mukherjee)? Has anyone escaped that moment without shedding few tears? Or let’s think about the totally stunning showcast of a mother-daughter relationship in Gippi which has never been so aptly portrayed in Hindi cinema so far.

So, as ardent Dharma fans, we have tonnes of such memories and come to think of it, we could do a Dharma A-Z scrapbook listing the best moments, super- stars, stunning stills, songs, etc. For instance, the letter ‘A’ brings the awesome character of Aisha from ‘Wake Up Sid’ to our minds. ‘B’ could have us all dancing to the tunes of the song ‘Bole Chudiyan’ from ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’. ‘Chikni Chameli’ from ‘Agneepath’ may remind us of the sizzling hot number, while the urge to hangout and have fun with friends may knock twice at the mention of ‘D’ for ‘Dostana’.

The list, of course, is endless and so are the smiles that each of the memories bring. So dash ahead and jott down your own list of Dharma Productions A-Z. Do share them in the comments below. We would love to read them.

Happy Birthday Imran Khan

The puppy-eyed actor of Bollywood turns 32 today! Known for his eclectic choice of coming-of-age roles, Imran has emerged as one of the self-made actors in Bollywood. Imran is one of those few actors who started his acting career at a very young age.

Since 2008, Imran has worked in 15 films with interesting on-screen appearances and his character as Jay Dhingra in ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ was much appreciated where he was seen as the casanova who detests the idea of love and yet can’t stop himself from falling in love with his co-star in the movie, Simran (Sonam Kapoor).

Once again in ‘Ek Main Aur Ek Tu’ and ‘Gori tere Pyaar Mein’, Imran is seen in challenging roles as Rahul kapoor and Sriram Venkat with a flair that only he could have. This actor with the lover-boy image is known to play the charming ladies’ man in romantic movies and in time, has proved that he deserves being listed as the top actors of his age.

Nominated several times for Screen and Stardust awards, Imran believes in modesty and hardwork and has worked his way through to the fame charts. Here’s from the Dharma team – a very happy birthday to Imran Khan! We wish abundance of success and health to the “I hate chalta hai attitude” star.

Monday moods!

As many faces, as many moods. Especially, Mondays! If you had to choose from being in bed and rushing off to a lecture or meeting, what would you do?

Monday moods vary right from waking up to having breakfast, to traveling to work or college, and it only gets better if you had to get back in bed. But that never happens! Wake up cheerful and there you are on the road to spreading joy. On the other hand, wake up grumpy and you are sure to have one long day. But little can be done when one’s struggling with the weekend hangover, isn’t it?

If you’ve watched the movie ‘Wake Up Sid’, you may relate yourself to someone tad bit lazy like Sid Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor), for who even moving a toe needs real efforts. Sid is a classic example of the happy-go-lucky bunch of guys who love to live life a day at a time. And if they could have it their way, weeks would be with 5-day weekends and just 2 days to work. Love the idea, don’t you?

Few of us are overflowing cauldrons of optimism and welcome opportunities open-hearted. Thinking of which, the first name that comes to mind is the shy, geeky Naina Talwar (Deepika Padukone) from the Bollywood hit ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’. The bespectacled heart-winning character is seen in a totally thought-provoking light. Always opening her day with a smile, Naina, is a medical student with a much organized life and there is hardly a straw which is out of place in Naina’s life. Her zeal to remain positive no matter what, is amazing. On the contrary, the male protagonist - Bunny, believes in partying hard and life, for him, is a dance floor where you dance your worries away and follow your heart’s desires.

Many ways you perceive your Mondays just as the stars we love do. Now, whether you look forward to welcoming Mondays with a smile or frown, you can rest assure about one thing; that is – amazing movie memories best done with the style Dharma Productions are known for.

Happy Birthday Supriya Pathak

Supriya Pathak was born on 7th January, 1961 to Dina Pathak, who herself was a well-known award winning actress. She was a part of the early new wave in Indian cinema movement.

Supriya began her career in the early 80’s and has recently worked in television sitcoms and has become a household name. The talented actress donned the role of Ranbir Kapoor’s mother in the film ‘Wake Up Sid’. She played the role of a very supporting and loving mother, who always looked out for her son’s happiness more than her own. In the movie she comes across as a very timid, gentle and loving mother; a few characteristics that every mother always has.

We hope that her warm, homely personality never fades away as that’s the thing she is known widely for. Here’s wishing this stellar actress a very Happy Birthday and we hope she achieves all her endeavours in life.

Happy Birthday Irrfan Khan!

Born on Born on January 7, 1967, Irrfan Ali Khan is one of the finest Indian actors in Bollywood cinema. Through his distinguished career, Irrfan has done some remarkable work that has made the entire country proud.

A graduate of the National School of Drama, Irrfan served time in television and a few feature films before his big international breakthrough came in 2001. Irrfan wowed the crowds with his performance in ‘The Lunchbox’, and we are extremely proud to have worked with such a distinguished actor. Irrfan’s career in Indian cinema has received a good deal of positive critical appreciation. He won the National Award for Best Actor for his amazing performance in Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox. His subtle down to earth nature was best suited for the role of the protagonist of the film.

The film was screened on 19 May 2013 as a part of the International Critics' Week at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it received a standing ovation and positive reviews and won the Critics Week Viewers Choice Award also known as Grand Rail d'Or.

It has been an eventful 47 years for Irrfan, with the promise of much more exciting work to come. The Dharma team would like to take this opportunity to wish Irrfan Khan a very Happy Birthday!

#Resolutions2015

The New Year is here and everyone’s busy making resolutions they can’t keep. Lucky for us, the lovely characters of Dharma films have also taken up New Year Resolutions and we look up to them when it comes to keeping their promises.

Here’s a list of some of our famous Dharma characters and their New Year’s resolutions for the year 2015:

The very quirky Meeta from Hasee Toh Phasee says that this year she’s going on a diet. Toothpaste is no longer a part of her diet anymore.

Dostana’s Kunal and Sam have decided that running after the same girl can be injurious to friendship. After a lot of thought, the two friends came to a conclusion that their resolution for 2015 is to not compete with each other for the same girl!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’s Anjali Sharma sent Rahul Khanna on a guilt trip and he resolves not to cheat at basketball. The same may not apply to other sports he says, but he assures us that he won’t cheat at basketball. Ever.

Pooh from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham says her New Year’s resolution is to make it a point to attend Aarti every morning, Rohan or no Rohan.

After marriage, 2 states’ Ananya has been spending lots of quality time with her mother-in-law, Kavita. After receiving tons of criticism from Kavita, Ananya has decided her New Year’s resolution is to learn how to cook some delectable North Indian food.

Gippi has taken a firm oath to go on a yo-yo diet in 2015. She plans to drop a yoyo into her food and eat only whatever sticks to it!

Now that you’ve seen a few New Year’s resolutions of some of our most memorable characters, Dharma productions would love to know what New Year’s resolutions you’ve taken up? Will it be to cut back on a few calories? Spend less on junk food and parties and focus more on savings? Or simply complete all those resolutions of 2014 that never made it to your checklist. Tell us your New Year’s resolutions in the comments below.
